Upper Level Prep by Alpha Centauri Privacy Policy

Upper Level Prep by Alpha Centauri (tagline: practice for the SSAT®) is a free practice tool for students preparing for the Upper Level SSAT®. It is operated by Shomir Banerjee, MD, an individual ("we", "us"), PO Box 2522, Monterey, CA 93942-2522. Email: alpha@alphacentauritech.com. If Upper Level Prep by Alpha Centauri is transferred to Alpha Centauri Technologies Inc, your information will transfer with it and will continue to be handled under this policy.

Who can use Upper Level Prep by Alpha Centauri
You must be 13 or older to create an account. We ask for your birth month and year before sign-up. If you are under 13, we do not let you sign up and we do not keep your information: your birth month and year are discarded right after the check, and only the "blocked" cookie described below stays on your device. If we learn we have collected information from a child under 13, we delete it. Parents who think this happened can email us.
Information we collect
- Account: your email address, used to send sign-in codes and to identify your account. We do not use passwords.
- Age check: your birth month and year, used only to decide whether you can sign up. We do not store your birth month or year. If you can sign up, we keep only a record that you confirmed you are 13 or older, with the time you accepted our terms and this policy.
- Practice data: your answers, scores, timing, completed tests, settings, and any writing-sample responses you type. Please do not put your name, school, or other personal details in writing samples.
- Question reports: if you report a problem with a question, we keep the report and the question it is about.
- Technical data: your IP address and request times, used to stop abuse (rate limiting). We also keep basic server logs, and our web host keeps its own standard logs.
- Cookies: one strictly necessary session cookie that keeps you signed in and protects forms. If the age check shows someone is under 13, we also set a strictly necessary cookie that holds only the word "blocked" for 30 days, so the sign-up form stays closed on that device. We use no analytics tags, advertising, tracking cookies, or third-party scripts. Our web host keeps standard server logs and automatically creates traffic statistics from them, which we use only to run and secure the site.
How we use it
We use this information only to run Upper Level Prep by Alpha Centauri. That means signing you in, giving you practice tests and score estimates, choosing questions you have not seen, fixing reported problems, keeping the service secure, and following the law. We do not sell or rent personal information. We do not use it for advertising or build advertising profiles. We do not use your practice data or writing to train AI models.
Who can see it and who we share it with
- You. You can see your own history.
- Our administrator. The operator's administrator can see account and practice data to support and improve the service.
- Service providers. InMotion Hosting stores the site and sends our email. It handles data only on our behalf.
- The law. We share information when the law requires it, or to protect the service or its users.
- A change of ownership. If the service is transferred to a new owner, this policy continues to apply to the information already collected.
No other parties collect information about your activity across websites through Upper Level Prep by Alpha Centauri.
How long we keep it
- Sign-in codes: each code is valid for 10 minutes and can be used once. Used or expired code records are deleted by routine cleanup, normally within about an hour.
- Rate-limit IP records: about 24 hours, then deleted by routine cleanup.
- Server logs: up to 90 days.
- Accounts and practice data: until you delete your account, or after 12 months without a sign-in, when we delete the account.
- Backups: deleted within 90 days.
Your choices and rights
You can delete your account and all your practice data at any time in Settings, or by emailing us. If you are under 18, you can also ask us to remove anything you typed into Upper Level Prep by Alpha Centauri. Removal may not reach copies already made by others or in backups until those expire. You can ask us for a copy of your information, or to correct it. Parents can make these requests for their child. We respond within 30 days.
Security
We use HTTPS, sign-in codes instead of passwords, limited admin access, and pseudonymous ids in our shared question records. No system is perfectly secure. If a breach affects your information, we will notify you as the law requires.
Do Not Track
We do not track visitors across other sites, so we do not respond differently to Do Not Track signals.
Changes
If we change this policy, we will post the new version here with a new effective date. If the change is material, we will notify account holders by email before it takes effect.
